Raising Okanagan Falls Incorporation Timeline During Estimates

During this year’s Estimates debates in the Legislature, I took the opportunity to question the Minister directly about the incorporation of Okanagan Falls and to seek clearer answers on the timeline for the creation of the new municipality.

Residents in Okanagan Falls voted in favour of incorporation because they wanted stronger local representation and a greater say in the decisions that shape their community. Since that vote, many residents have been asking for clearer information about when the process will be completed and how upcoming public consultations will shape the final outcome.

During the exchange in the Legislature, the Minister confirmed several important points that are now on the public record.

The Province indicated that letters patent for the new municipality are expected to be completed by the end of June at the latest in order to keep the process aligned with the October 2026 local government elections, when the first municipal council for Okanagan Falls could potentially be elected.

The Minister also confirmed that public engagement is planned for April, including both online consultation and in-person opportunities for residents to provide feedback on key aspects of the incorporation.

During my questions, I raised concerns about the limited information currently available to residents and asked whether the upcoming consultation would include a structured process for community members to provide meaningful input. I also asked whether topics such as municipal boundaries, the name of the municipality, and governance structures would be included in those consultations.

The Minister indicated that residents will have an opportunity to provide input on those areas as part of the engagement process.

Another key concern I raised was transparency. Residents deserve to know that the final letters patent will reflect what was actually discussed during consultation. I asked the Minister directly whether the public could expect a “no surprises” approach, where nothing appears in the final documents that was not part of the public consultation.

The Minister stated that it is the government’s intention to conduct a fulsome engagement process and confirmed that transparency is the goal as discussions continue with local partners and the community.

The incorporation of Okanagan Falls represents an important moment for the community. With this being the first municipal incorporation in British Columbia in 15 years, it is essential that residents are fully informed and have meaningful opportunities to participate in shaping the future of their municipality.

I will continue to follow this process closely and ensure that the concerns and questions I hear from residents are brought forward in the Legislature.
